Middletown 1,000-Car Parking Garage
This 1,000-car parking deck in Middletown, New Jersey is designed around our composite joist and beam floor system. This floor system is the most economical for open parking structures on the market today. It is lighter, yet stronger and stiffer, with increased diaphragm strength due to the composite action between the steel framing and the cast-in-place concrete slab.
With this design, standard open-web joists are fabricated with the webs projecting through pre-punched corrugated decking, which become encased in the poured-in-place concrete slab. The supporting beams are made composite with the concrete slab by use of special pans fitted around the joist bearing, which allow the concrete to surround the joist ends. Joists are usually spaced up to 4’-0” on centers. Bay sizes of up to 27-0” x 60-0” are commonly used.
To reduce future maintenance costs, we use hot dipped galvanized steel joists and heavy galvanizing on the decking. The structural steel beams and columns are epoxy coated. The poured-in-place slabs are high strength concrete with mesh reinforcing. Either additives or a flexible membrane can be used for additional water tightness. All the structural members remain exposed to view for quick inspection and ease of maintenance from below. This view offers no “surprises” from future deterioration of vital hidden structural elements. Normal periodic maintenance of the concrete slab will guarantee a trouble free, long lasting parking structure.
