Five-Story Parking Garage
This five story parking structure is formed with our removable steel decking and is supported on a structural steel frame. The parking deck is bound on three sides by an apartment building. The traffic flow is by means of internal ramps. Elevators and stairs connect the parking deck to the apartment building at each floor.
The building code requires a two-hour fire rating, which is accomplished by spray fireproofing the steel. The slabs are conventionally reinforced with epoxy-coated bars and provide the necessary two-hour rating. We considered post-tensioning but found it to be too expensive for this project. Typical slab spans varies up to 18’-0”. The permanent composite beams span up to 59’-2”.
For economy and scheduling reasons, the contractor specified one set of forms to cover one complete level. After a pour, when the concrete reached 3,000 psi, the forms and shoring joists were lowered and transported by forklift, up the poured ramps, to the next level for reinstallation. The shoring joists and decking were used interchangeably on the flat and on the ramps. No vertical posts or shores are required with this system. Where slab spans are less than the maximum, the increased lap of the decking makes up the difference. The adjustable shear plates, at the horizontal shoring joist ends, allows for minor variations in span dimensions.
The decking receives form oil before each pour. This prevents the wet concrete from sticking to the decking, which requires only minimum deck cleaning between uses.
